Step 3: Discovering Drivers

Initiative Overview

Outcome

Encourage a growth mindset in employees by helping them discover what drives them in their career.

 

Conversations are core to career development. Career Drivers provide improved career vision and confidence for employees. Managers will also learn more about how to better support their employees and what drives them in their careers.

Description

Everyone in the company should complete the Career Driver Card exercise with his or her manager. Not only does this exercise help employees discover what drives their career, but they’ll also improve their relationship with their manager.

 

Every manager will receive a deck of cards, as well as training to help them walk their employees through the exercise successfully. Employees will then have the chance to add their drivers to their Bridge account so they can reflect on them and update them over time.

What To Watch For

Don’t Rush the Exercise

The Career Driver exercise takes time to complete. Set aside enough time to go through the exercise—an hour is recommended. Make sure you schedule the exercise at a time when you’re able to give your full attention to their career driver journey and not be rushing to make another meeting.

 

Prepare for Tough Conversations

Drivers get to the core of what matters, and some employees may be hesitant to talk about their career with their manager. Some employees may not want to go through the drivers exercise with their manager at all.

 

However, in many cases the Career Driver exercise can help resolve the issues that are causing employees to be hesitant. By doing the exercise with their manager, both the employee and manager can build empathy and get to know each other better. If possible, encourage managers to thoughtfully approach employees who may be disengaged and have an open mind going into the Career Driver exercise, even if they’re nervous about it.

 

Bad Managers May Misuse the Drivers Exercise

Bad managers will use anything they can as a weapon against their employees, and disengaged employees may bring up drivers that surface negative issues. One or both of you will discover blind spots or clarify existing conflicts.

 

Timeline Overview

Timeline dates are based on the number of days before or after the date you roll out Career Drivers to your company. For instance, T-1 represents one day before your launch date, while T+7 represents seven days after your launch date.
