Initiative Overview

Outcome

Kickstart career development for everyone in your company by helping them define what their career aspirations are and build a career development plan during Career Basecamp.

Description

Career Basecamp is a weeklong program focused on kick-starting your career development culture. Employees will have a variety of opportunities to have meaningful conversations with their managers, and go through exercises that will help them gain clarity about their future career goals and confidence that they’re making progress.

Employee and manager mindset change is the critical first factor in improving an organization’s career development culture. Effecting this change broadly in an organization is difficult, so the best way for companies to make progress in this area is a broad scale, visible, executive-supported program such as "Career Basecamp."

By helping employees explore what their goals are for their career, and connect what they’re doing today to that career vision, employees will be more confident and fulfilled in their roles. This will also help them identify stretch assignments and opportunities to expand their role and gain valuable experience. While developing a skill set and career progression shouldn’t be a full time job, it’s an important practice that should be built into our work schedule.

What To Watch For

Encourage Growth over Promotion

For whatever reason, when you say Career, everyone hears Promotion, but those two things aren’t synonymous! Take opportunities to explicitly clarify the difference and reinforce the importance of career growth.

Be Supportive in the Conversation

If an employee is considering making a change that you aren’t excited about (such as leaving a team or the company), seek to understand and provide support in the best way you can. It’s better to stay part of the conversation and focus on helping the employee find career fulfillment (here or elsewhere) than to alienate them and leave a bad taste in their mouth if they do decide to move on.

Be Open

For many employees these will be new conversations, and may push managers and employees out of their comfort zone. Encourage them to be open!
