Limiting what a custom manager role can see.

I'm new to Bridge and am trying to figure out what privileges to turn on for a custom role that I've created.  I want this custom role (a manager level with employees under them) to be able to see their groups and users but not the groups and users of another manager.  It appears that if I let them view groups, they can see all groups.  Am I doing something wrong or is this how the system is designed to work?
