Expiration without re-enrollment - Help me understand

Is anyone using expiration for programs and/or courses without the auto re-enroll setting? If so, I would love to hear how you're using them to help me understand what exactly the feature does. The documentation in the Bridge Learn guide isn't very detailed about what expiring a course actually does, especially when the auto re-enroll is disabled.

 

To clarify, in the limited testing I've done with this scenario, I don't see exactly what course expiration does if there is no auto re-enroll enabled. The course still shows on the user's list of required courses, they are still able to complete the course, etc. Maybe I'm missing something here and if someone is using the feature this way it would help me to understand its functionality.
