Can learners navigate courses nonlinearly?

When a learner is working through a course they're presented with three navigation options: Continue, back, and of course, they can close the browser window and quit. I have students that would like to be able to see thumbnails like the ones available in Author mode, to enable moving through courses nonlinearly - jumping forward and backward as necessary to more quickly access content they wish to review. Can they do this?
