How do I upload SCORM content?

We are going to walk through how to upload SCORM content, the default settings, how to change them, and general enrollment best practices.

To set up SCORM content in your Bridge account, you’ll click on the “upload course” hyperlink from the Author > Courses page.

Drag in your zipped SCORM content for upload.

While the SCORM may pull in some of the course details, including title and description, all of this can be edited before publishing the course in Bridge.

SIDE NOTE. Just because a course is published does not mean that it is visible to learners. Setting the learner relevancy (i.e. required, recommended, or available in the Learning Library) for the course or category is necessary to expose the content to learners.

Let’s look at the default settings by clicking on the “More Settings” link.

The default due date, like any course created in Bridge, is set to seven days. This can be changed to “within” or “on” and then the days or dates can be modified.

If this is required content, you may want to set an expiration date with an accompanying re-enrollment (i.e. yearly). You will do this by toggling on the “set course expiration” toggle and follow details on best practices in this help article.

You can then decide if you’d like to allow self re-enroll. Turning on this toggle means that learners can re-enroll in a course after completing it (instead of the single option to review the course once completed).

The next collection of choices are found on all Bridge content:

  • Certificate - learner will have a certificate available upon completion
  • External ID - a unique value can be put into this field
  • Duration - if this is not provided by the SCORM zip file, it can be added manually (we have a Time in Course Good to Knows article for all things related to tracking time in course in Bridge)
  • Continuing Education Credits - toggle on and choose any value one or higher

There is the option to open the SCORM content in three ways:

  • Current Window - the course will open in the same browser window
  • New Window - the course will open in a new window, most likely with a prompt from the learner’s pop-up blocker
  • New window w/ confirm - the course will play in a new window after they click a prompt confirming that action

The default setting for a learner to view SCORM is in a new window.

Bridge requires that courses pass back two of the following three data points:

  • Completion Status
  • Success Status
  • Score

The Passed/Incomplete and Passed/Failed reporting options will report a completion and success status by default. When publishing the course with the Complete/Incomplete or Complete/Failed reporting options, you would need to ensure that a success status and/or score is set to be passed back.

Bridge’s default is for a required score of 80%. If there is a quiz in the SCORM, you will want to ensure that the passing value for that quiz aligns with what you put into Bridge.

If there is no quiz, the best practice is to put the required score to 0% and you can then select to handle completions with a 100% (a representation that the course has been taken).

SCORM course scores are calculated in two ways:

  • Average of All Attempts
  • Latest Attempt

The default setting is the score for the latest attempt.

Finally, you’ll set the rule for migrating enrollments in SCORM Engine. The default is to always move enrollments. This means that learners will see the new version the next time they launch the course.

We are going to modify this course’s name and description and add this course into the “Safety” category. The title and description appear on the tiles in the learners’ libraries.

We set the course to be available to all learners in the Learning Library.

If you need best practices on setting up categories, programs, and Journeys to bulk together content for better visibility, read this help article.

We are then going to publish the course, which means that, because of the learner relevancy settings, the course will be available to all learners in their Learning Library. Without that setting, the course would simply be published in the backend for view by only admins and authors.

You can also add cover images to SCORM courses in Bridge even if an image is not part of the SCORM package upload.

Adding a cover image supports branding your Bridge instance and can increase conversion of learners self-enrolling into courses.

We have an article here that dives deeper into branding in Bridge. It covers the appropriate image sizes as well as tips and tricks on where to find good stock photography on the internet.

When you click on the “add cover” button, you will go to the Bridge authoring page where you can pull in the image that you’d like to use as the cover.

You can also change the headline statement and the course info statement. These details will only live on the cover slide. They do not take the place of or override the title and description data at the course level in the admin settings.

Any changes here will be saved by hitting the “publish course” button.

From the learners’ perspectives, they can now go into the Learning Library and find this piece of content.

If the due date is a requirement, then we advise assigning the content as required either to individual learners or through a group affiliation. Required content is the only content that is included in Bridge’s digest notifications (you can read more about setting up the summary emails here).

When required, the content will appear on the learner’s My Learning page in the required section.

If the SCORM package is updated, you will want to replace the content for this specific course so that it retains the same ID in Bridge. This impacts re-enrollment settings and reporting. Go to the course and hit the “replace” button.

You will be asked to re-upload the zip file, and the established enrollment settings will take care of the rest.
