You can use CSV files to manage user and course enrollments in Bridge.
Read on to understand how to format data correctly in your CSV files and download pre-built templates and sample exports admins can use to import users, manage historical course completions, and keep track of account configurations.
Requirements for CSV Files
When uploading a CSV file to Bridge, it must meet the following conditions:
A Unique Identifier (UID)
A field must be used as the unique identifier (UID). This data point also serves as the user login.
The UID can contain any string of characters (including spaces) or numbers. The UID field shouldn't contain any duplicates or recycle a string to represent another user.
Note: UIDs are case-sensitive and must be unique. A mismatch in capitalization can result in unexpected user creation or termination.
File Encoding
Formatting via UTF-8 is essential to maintain consistent and clean data. Bridge will accept CSVs not encoded with UTF-8, but some characters may not appear.
Recommendations for CSV Files
Aside from the required fields listed above, it’s recommended that you include the following data fields.
Email Addresses
Must be in a standard email format (like abcd@xyz.xy or abcd@xyz.xyz). Bridge won't upload lines that contain invalid emails or characters.
Organizational Data
This can include:
- Manager UID
- Department/division/team
- Cost center (if different than Department)
- Product delineations
- Employee status (FT/PT/contractor/temp/intern, etc.)
Geographic Data
This can include:
- Country/state
- Company locations
- Location codes (if easily understood/referenced by Admins)
- Corporate or geographic regions
Job Function Data
- Position or job role (the standard Bridge field entitled Job Title can’t be used to create Smart Groups, and it’s recommended you only use it with Bridge’s performance management features)
- Job function
- Required job certifications
- Jobs requiring any compliance training (animal handling/noise/biohazard, etc.)
Name
This field can be formatted as follows:
- First (as a single column)
- Last (as a single column)
- First Last
- Last, First
Language
Bridge allows you to define language preferences for users within the interface and emails, but not course content, unless it's been manually translated by the author. The CSV should be formatted with the corresponding language codes.
Note: Language codes are case-sensitive. If no language code is set, Bridge defaults to US English.
User Password
The Bridge team can enable password upload for your account if your users are unable to set a password through their welcome email.
To set a password for users, include a Password column in your CSV file. This method isn't usually recommended as the file contains the password in plain text.
You can also set a password via a password reset request.
CSV Formatting Best Practices
User Management and Provisioning
When uploading a CSV file for an entire account, Admins can create as many columns for users as needed to include account information. Column headings are optional and don't have to be included directly in the CSV file.
Tip: We recommend including column headers in your CSV file as it can prevent mapping errors.
Default column options in Bridge include:
- Full Name (First Last)
- Full Name (Last, First)
- First Name
- Last Name
- Hire Date (MM/DD/YYYY)
- Job Title
Considerations:
- One CSV column is required as the unique identifier, which defines all account information per Bridge user.
- If you're assigning Managers to Learners, you must include a column that contains the manager's unique identifier.
- If specific fields in your CSV file don’t use any of the default Bridge heading options, you can create your own custom fields for those columns. Any custom fields you create will always be included in your account as CSV file import options.

Adding and Editing Roles
To add or edit roles using a CSV upload, the CSV file column header and Bridge custom field label must both be named Roles.
Considerations:
- Roles are case-sensitive.
- Multiple roles should be separated by a “|” pipe character in your CSV file.
- Don’t include spaces between the role and pipe characters.
- The order of roles doesn’t matter, so Account Admin|Admin will produce the same results as Admin|Account Admin.

Historical Course Completions
Historical course completion data can be uploaded using a CSV file, allowing Admins to migrate user scores from previous non-Bridge courses into Bridge efficiently and keep data in one place.
The process for uploading a CSV containing data for multiple courses differs from the process for a single course.

Single-Course CSV Format
To successfully upload historical enrollments with a CSV file, the CSV file must contain the following columns:
- User Login ID: User Login IDs must match the Bridge user's current user ID (the user's unique identifier). This defines all account information per Bridge user.
- Number of attempts: Attempts must be whole numbers input as numerals (e.g., 13, not 13.5 or thirteen).
- Completion date: All dates must include a day, month, and year. Bridge will interpret dates in United States formatting, in which the month appears before the day (e.g., 12/31/2017, not 31/12/2017). You can also include an optional time of day in date fields (e.g., 12/31/2017 12:00).
- Due date: This field has the same formatting requirements as completion dates.
- Expiration date: This field has the same formatting requirements as completion dates.
- Score: Scores must contain whole numbers between 0 and 100, input as numerals (e.g., 75, not 75.3 or seventy-five).
- Inactive: If the user has completed the course previously and you want to document all past enrollments, you can add them all and set them as Inactive. Set the value as T or True to mark the enrollment as inactive.
Considerations:
- The Completion Date column is optional and only needs to be included if you want to import completion data for the course. We recommend including this column to give the most accurate reporting.
- Ensure that you only add users you want to include in the course. Users added to Bridge incorrectly with historical course data can't be removed from the Learners tab.
Multiple-Course CSV Format
To upload historical enrollments in multiple courses, you must add a Course ID column to the CSV file.
Course IDs must be whole numbers input as numerals (e.g., 13, not 13.5 or thirteen). You can find the Course ID in the URL of your course details page.
When uploading historical enrollments for multiple courses, you’ll need to assign a Course ID during the CSV upload process.
